On Monday, three of Fairbury’s finest wrestlers traveled to Grand Island to compete in the Maine/Nebraska Wrestling exchange, which is in it’s 34th year of promoting the sport in both states.
Damian Green, Jacob Johnson and Logan Slater, all of whom wrestled at the State Wrestling Competition in February, were selected to wrestle in the Maine/Nebraska Exchange by Grand Island Northwest (GINW) High School, which played host to the competition. Head wrestling coach for Fairbury, Derek Garfield, explained that Fairbury has been represented in the competition for a number of years.
“Fairbury wrestlers have been involved in the Maine exchange the last six years,” said Garfield, “including being a host site two different times. I have had the honor of traveling to Maine as a Team Nebraska Coach two different times as well. Each host site builds their own roster, so GINW asked them to wrestle.”
Garfield was pleased with the results of the duals on Monday, noting that Johnson defeated a three-time state champion in an overtime match.
“The Fairbury boys wrestled well last night,” Garfield said. “Damian Green lost a hard fought match 4-3, Jacob Johnson beat a three-time state champion in overtime, and Logan Slater fought hard before losing by pin. We were excited to be a part of the experience and I was very proud of the effort our wrestlers gave!”
Garfield is glad they had the opportunity to represent Fairbury during the Maine/Nebraska Exchange, helping to promote the sport of wrestling and foster friendships along the way.
