Roughly 175 people came together at Jefferson Community Health & Life on Wednesday to discuss the importance of women’s health with the first ever Women’s Health Fair.
Erin Starr, who organized the fair, hopes that it will continue to grow in the coming years, noting the high turnout for the first year.
“We really weren’t sure what to expect the first year, but our goal was to get the women of our community into our facility because we know that women are the primary decision makers for most families,” said Starr. “We wanted them to see the ways Jefferson Community Health & Life and the Burkley Fitness Center can help them to make healthy lifestyle choices. We had health screenings and educational booths, but we also wanted it to be like a woman’s night out with some fun shopping booths.”
Starr explained that if the fair keeps growing, they may host it at another location to accommodate the increased number of booths and visitors. She emphasized that women’s health is an important issue that not many people consider. She encourages women to visit Jefferson Community Health and Life to find out ways they can stay healthy.
“It comes down to the fact that women often don’t take care of themselves,” Starr said. “They’re often busy with families, kids, making sure everybody’s ready for school and their job, but they don’t often look into their own health issues or take a night off for themselves to learn about these things. Jefferson Community Health & Life wants to be that community partner in giving that education.”
