Katherine Wadsworth, 97, wife of the late Richard Wadsworth of Fairbury, NE passed away November 25, 2017 at Cedarwood Assisted Living in Fairbury. She was born at home January 5, 1920 to Henry and Elizabeth Heiser of rural Aurora, NE. They lived there until 1929 when the family moved to a Holt County farm by Atkinson, NE.
Katherine worked on the family farm, rode her horse Molly to school and attended the Wesleyan Methodist Church. She met her future husband at a farm sale where she was selling lunches and pie—he didn’t buy any pie but saw something he liked!! They were married May 4, 1946. To this union, two children were born-son George (Mick) Wadsworth and daughter Dorleen (Dee) Short. During the marriage, she helped her husband in ranching for 23 years and especially liked raking hay with her old H Tractor. Due to her husband’s illness, they moved off the ranch to O’Neill where she worked as a nurses’ aide at Avera St Anthony Hospital for 16 years. Her years as a nurses’ aide made her a very understanding patient. She felt real nurses could easily be identified by the blood pressure cuff and stethoscope they used in place of machines.
After retirement, she and her husband moved to Fairbury, NE in 1989 to be near their daughter. Katherine enjoyed volunteering at the Heritage where she painted fingernails for those “old folks” who were often younger than her!! She also enjoyed volunteering for the commodities food program for Blue Valley Community Action where she met many wonderful people and received their Treasure Award. She also received the Good Neighbor Award from Channel 10/11 News.
Katherine liked doing “fancy work” like crocheting blankets and needle work. She often baked gingersnap cookies and zucchini bread for her grandchildren and never met a dessert she didn’t like.
She enjoyed attending the Gladstone Countryside Church for many years. Her church family in Gladstone made her feel very welcome, especially the ladies who rode along in “the Gray Haired Express.” She helped in the kitchen and enjoyed serving meals for the 5-Star Bible Camp, funerals and anywhere she could help.
When traveling became difficult, Katherine later attended the Presbyterian Church with her family and was welcomed there.
Katherine is survived by her son George and wife Dorothy of Evansville, IN and daughter Dorleen (Dee) Short and husband Robert of Fairbury. She is also survived by grandchildren and their spouses— Josh, Mark, Tami, Gabino, Jenny, Dante, Dwayne and Tim and 7 great-grandchildren. Sister-n-law Arlene Heiser of Atkinson, NE and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, her parents and brothers Edward and Alvin.
Funeral services will be Thursday, November 30, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Fairbury with Pastor Tom Osborne officiating. Burial will be in the Fairbury Cemetery. Memorials will go to the Gladstone Country Church & Presbyterian Church. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury is in charge of arrangements.
