The directory information at the Steele City, Nebraska cemetery has recently been updated. The original directory information was based on a tombstone transcriptions completed by Rosella Myers Cline in the 1980s. At that time Rosella “walked” all of the cemeteries in Jefferson County transcribing tombstone information. A copy of her information may found at the Fairbury Public Library.
According the Jefferson County Register of Deed’s Office the Steele City Cemetery was platted in 1878. Some tombstones have earlier dates which may indicate they were moved from the Jenkins Mills settlement located southeast of Steele City along the Little Blue River. The cemetery is located on the northeast corner of the intersection of 577th Avenue and 705th Road, just off of Hiway 8 one mile northeast of Steele City.
For the past few months Steele City Cemetery Association, Inc. Board members Lyle Katz and Mitch Zabokrtsky have been reviewing cemetery records and surveying the tombstone inscriptions to update the directory information.
The directory information includes a map and an alphabetical list of cemetery lot owners. A second map with an alphabetical list of burials is also posted. The list includes the person’s name, birth date, death date and comments which may be included on the tombstone. These comments may include marriage date, names of children and military information.
Also included on the directory is a copy of (1) the Steele City Cemetery Association, Inc. By-laws, (2) the Articles of Incorporation and (3) a List of Cemetery Fees.
