Zachary A. Kelch Age 18 of Ohiowa, Nebraska was arrested on April 27, 2017 for Alleged Possession of Methamphetamine (3 Felony), Possession of Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony (Shotgun)(2 Felony), Possession of Marijuana Less Ounce (Infraction) and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
On April 26, 2017 at approximately 2318 hours, an officer with the Fairbury Police Department was on patrol in the area of 300 block of 5th Street in Fairbury when he observed a red and white Chevy S-10 Pickup with no license plates. The officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The officer approached the vehicle on the passenger side and immediately observed a shotgun sitting next to the driver. The officer identified the driver as Zachary A. Kelch. While officers were speaking with Kelch, they observed that the shotgun that was seated next next to Kelch was sawed off. The officer called for another unit to assist. A K-9 Unit with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office arrived to assist. Officers continued to speak with Kelch about what was going on. Due to certain indicators during the investigation, the officer requested the deputy to deploy the K-9. While the deputy was preparing to deploy the K-9, Kelch retrieved a marijuana pipe from his pocket and gave it to the officer.
The officer was informed by the K-9 Deputy that the K-9 indicated the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was then conducted. Officers located several baggies containing a white powdery substance inside the vehicle along with syringes which contained suspected methamphetamine, along with suspected marijuana and paraphernalia. Officers field tested the substances and the substances tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana.
Kelch was transported to the Jefferson County Detention Facility on the above charges. The Fairbury Police Department was assisted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
